KOLKATA – In a significant development ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially released Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman. The move follows a formal instruction from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), citing “recent developments” and growing geopolitical sensitivities.
Key Highlights of the Release
The decision brings an abrupt end to Mustafizur’s tenure with the defending champions before he could bowl a single delivery for them in the 2026 season.
Auction Value: KKR had acquired the 30-year-old left-arm seamer for ₹9.20 crore during the mini-auction in December 2025, after an intense bidding war with Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals.
Replacement Allowed: BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that KKR would be permitted to seek a replacement player to fill the overseas slot.
Financial Recovery: Reports suggest that because the release was mandated by the board as a force majeure event, the franchise is expected to receive their full auction amount back into their purse.
The Reason Behind the Directive
While the BCCI’s official statement was brief, mentioning “recent developments all across,” the move is widely understood to be a response to the escalating political tension between India and Bangladesh.
“The BCCI has asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from its squad. They can ask for a replacement if needed, and upon request, the BCCI will allow it,” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told reporters on Saturday.
The signing had sparked a political storm in India. Several leaders and organizations voiced concerns over the inclusion of a Bangladeshi player, citing reports of unrest and violence against minorities in Bangladesh. The pressure on the franchise and its co-owner, Shah Rukh Khan, had intensified over the last few weeks, leading to the board’s intervention to prevent further controversy.
KKR’s Official Response
Following the BCCI’s instruction, KKR issued a statement confirming the release was carried out following “due process and consultations.”
“Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that BCCI/IPL, as the regulator of the tournament, has instructed it to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad… further details [regarding a replacement] will be communicated in due course.”
What This Means for KKR
The loss of “The Fizz” is a tactical blow for the Knight Riders. Mustafizur is known for his death-over specialist skills and was expected to lead their pace attack alongside Harshit Rana and Andre Russell.
