ICC to Mediate as Bangladesh Refuses to Play T20 World Cup Matches in India

NEW DELHI — The International Cricket Council (ICC) has scheduled an emergency meeting with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday to address a escalating crisis that threatens the upcoming 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. The dispute centers on Bangladesh’s formal refusal to travel to India for their scheduled group-stage matches, citing “safety and security” concerns.

The tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is set to begin on February 7, 2026. Bangladesh is currently slated to play three matches at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and one at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The Catalyst: The Mustafizur Rahman Incident

The diplomatic and cricketing standoff was ignited last week when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directed the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from his contract.

The BCCI cited “recent developments” and rising political tensions as the reason for the directive. In response, the BCB, acting on advice from the Bangladesh government, declared that it no longer feels the “prevailing situation” in India is conducive to the safety of its national contingent.

Bangladesh’s Demands

In a formal letter to the ICC, the BCB requested that all of its matches be relocated to a neutral venue, specifically proposing Sri Lanka as an alternative.

“Following a thorough assessment… the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh National Team will not travel to India for the tournament under the current conditions,” the BCB stated in an official release on January 4.

ICC’s Position and Challenges

The ICC is expected to push back against the relocation request. Reports suggest the governing body will urge the BCB to adhere to the original schedule, highlighting the logistical nightmare of shifting matches just one month before the opening ceremony.

Key factors the ICC is weighing include:

VVIP Security Offer: The BCCI has reportedly offered “State Level Security”—equivalent to protection provided to heads of state—for the Bangladesh team.

Precedent: The ICC is wary of setting a precedent where bilateral political tensions can dictate the movement of global tournament fixtures.

Operational Logistics: Ticketing, broadcasting rights, and hospitality arrangements for the Kolkata and Mumbai fixtures are already finalized.

Scheduled Bangladesh Group C Fixtures

Date Opponent Venue

Feb 7 West Indies Kolkata

Feb 9 Italy Kolkata

Feb 14 England Kolkata

Feb 17 Nepal Mumbai

While Pakistan’s matches have already been scheduled for Sri Lanka under a pre-existing neutral-venue agreement, no such provision was initially made for Bangladesh. If the meeting fails to reach a resolution, the tournament faces the risk of a forfeit or a last-minute radical reshuffling of the 20-team event.
