Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has reacted to music maestro A.R. Rahman’s recent remark that sparked a debate after being termed “communal” by sections of the public. Akhtar, known for his outspoken views on social harmony and freedom of expression, addressed the controversy by urging people to approach such statements with nuance rather than outrage.
Speaking on the issue, Akhtar emphasized that artists often speak from personal experiences and emotional contexts, and their words should not be selectively interpreted to fuel divisions. He said that Rahman, whose work and public life have largely reflected inclusive values, deserves to be heard in full rather than judged by isolated remarks.
Akhtar also highlighted the broader problem of communal polarization, noting that social media frequently amplifies controversy while ignoring intent and context. According to him, constructive dialogue is far more important than public condemnation, especially when it involves cultural figures who have consistently contributed to unity through their art.
The controversy erupted after Rahman made comments during a public interaction that were interpreted by some as having communal undertones. While supporters defended the composer, critics questioned the phrasing of his remarks, leading to a wider debate online.
Calling for restraint, Akhtar concluded that disagreements should be handled with empathy and rational discussion. “Art and artists should bring people together, not be used as tools to deepen divides,” he said, stressing the need for maturity in public discourse.
