In the midst of a national debate sparked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on Vande Mataram, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s great-grandson has come forward in support of the Prime Minister, saying that “what the PM has done is good.”
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Bankim Chandra’s descendant said the Prime Minister’s effort to highlight the historical and cultural significance of Vande Mataram should be viewed positively. “Vande Mataram is a national treasure. If the Prime Minister is drawing attention to it, then that is something we should appreciate,” he said.
The debate began after PM Modi, while addressing an event earlier this week, referred to the enduring legacy of Vande Mataram and its author, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. His comments triggered political reactions, with some opposition leaders questioning the context and intent behind invoking the iconic patriotic song.
However, Bankim Chandra’s great-grandson dismissed the political controversy. “My great-grandfather’s work belongs to the entire nation. It should not be dragged into political disputes. The Prime Minister’s remarks were respectful and aligned with national sentiment,” he added.
Vande Mataram, written in the late 19th century and later adopted as the national song, played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement. The renewed discussion around it has once again brought attention to Bankim Chandra’s contribution to India’s cultural and nationalist ethos.
With support now coming from the author’s own family, the debate is expected to take a new turn even as political parties continue to exchange sharp statements over the Prime Minister’s speech.
