New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the much-anticipated Delhi Metro Phase-VA expansion, marking another major step in strengthening the National Capital Region’s urban transport infrastructure. The decision is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and support sustainable mobility across Delhi and its surrounding areas.
Under Phase-VA, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will undertake new corridor extensions and capacity upgrades aimed at meeting the growing travel demand of the capital. The expansion will improve last-mile connectivity to densely populated residential zones, commercial hubs, and emerging urban pockets, making daily commuting faster and more efficient for millions of passengers.
Officials said the project will be implemented with a focus on modern technology, energy efficiency, and passenger safety. Like previous phases, Phase-VA is expected to incorporate environment-friendly features, including regenerative braking systems and the use of renewable energy, reinforcing Delhi Metro’s reputation as one of the world’s most sustainable mass transit systems.
The expansion is also likely to generate significant employment during construction and operations, while giving a boost to economic activity in areas connected by the new routes. Improved metro access is expected to increase real estate development and ease pressure on Delhi’s roads, which remain heavily congested.
With this approval, the Centre has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding public transport infrastructure in metropolitan cities. The Delhi Metro, often called the lifeline of the capital, currently carries millions of passengers daily, and Phase-VA is expected to further strengthen its role in shaping Delhi’s urban mobility future.
Detailed timelines, corridor alignments, and cost estimates are expected to be announced by DMRC in the coming weeks.
