Canada Clears India of Violent Crime Links Ahead of PM Carney’s Diplomatic Visit

Source BBC

Canada has stated that it no longer sees any connection between India and violent criminal activities on Canadian soil, marking a significant shift in tone ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s upcoming diplomatic engagement with New Delhi.

The clarification comes after months of strained relations between Ottawa and New Delhi following allegations and counter-allegations over security concerns and diplomatic conduct. Canadian officials indicated that ongoing investigations have not established any current operational link between the Indian government and violent crimes in Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to undertake a high-level visit aimed at restoring dialogue and strengthening cooperation on trade, security, and people-to-people ties. His trip is being viewed as an effort to stabilize relations with India, one of Canada’s key partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

Tensions between Canada and India escalated in the past over allegations relating to extremist activities and diaspora politics. Diplomatic expulsions and strong public statements from both sides had further deepened the rift. However, recent diplomatic signals suggest both governments are seeking a reset.

Canadian authorities emphasized that law enforcement agencies continue to act independently and will pursue criminal investigations wherever evidence leads. At the same time, officials underscored the importance of maintaining constructive international partnerships based on mutual respect and sovereignty.

India has consistently denied any involvement in violent activities abroad and has called for credible evidence to support earlier claims. New Delhi has also maintained that concerns related to extremism and anti-India activities in Canada must be addressed seriously.

Observers say Carney’s visit could open the door to renewed cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, education, and climate policy. Both nations share deep economic ties and a large Indian diaspora community in Canada, which plays a vital role in bilateral relations.

As diplomatic channels reopen, policymakers on both sides appear keen to move beyond confrontation and toward pragmatic engagement, signaling a potential thaw in one of the most closely watched international relationships in recent months.
