Centre Pushes Nationwide Shift to Piped Gas for Safer, Cleaner Energy Use

In a significant move aimed at improving safety standards and promoting cleaner energy consumption, the central government has directed a phased transition from traditional fuel sources to piped natural gas (PNG) across urban and semi-urban areas. The mandate is expected to impact households, commercial establishments, and small industries currently dependent on LPG cylinders and other conventional fuels.

Officials stated that the decision is part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and minimize risks associated with the storage and handling of fuel cylinders. Piped gas systems are considered safer, as they eliminate the need for transporting and storing combustible cylinders, thereby reducing the chances of leaks and accidents.

The government has instructed state authorities and city gas distribution companies to accelerate infrastructure development to support the transition. This includes expanding pipeline networks and ensuring last-mile connectivity to residential complexes and commercial hubs.

Industry experts believe the move will also bring long-term economic benefits. While the initial installation costs may be high, consumers are likely to benefit from stable pricing and uninterrupted fuel supply in the long run. Additionally, the shift is expected to support India’s commitment to increasing the share of natural gas in its energy mix.

However, concerns remain regarding the readiness of infrastructure in smaller towns and rural areas. Some stakeholders have urged the government to provide subsidies or financial assistance to ease the transition for low-income households and small businesses.

The Centre has assured that the rollout will be gradual, with adequate time given to states and consumers to adapt. Awareness campaigns are also expected to be launched to educate the public about the benefits and usage of piped gas systems.

The directive marks a key step in India’s energy transition roadmap, aligning with global efforts to adopt cleaner and more sustainable fuel alternatives.
