DGCA Imposes ₹22.2 Crore Penalty on IndiGo Over December Flight Disruptions

India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has imposed a fine of ₹22.2 crore on IndiGo for widespread flight disruptions reported during December. The regulator has also issued a warning to the airline’s senior management, stressing the need for stronger operational preparedness and passenger handling mechanisms.

According to the DGCA, the action follows a detailed review of IndiGo’s operations after a surge in delays, cancellations, and passenger complaints during the peak travel period. The disruptions were attributed to a combination of operational lapses, including inadequate planning, crew shortages, and insufficient contingency arrangements amid adverse weather and high passenger demand.

In its order, the DGCA said IndiGo failed to consistently adhere to regulatory norms related to passenger facilitation, timely information dissemination, and overall service reliability. The watchdog noted that while external factors such as weather can impact schedules, airlines are expected to have robust systems in place to minimise inconvenience to passengers.

Along with the monetary penalty, the regulator has cautioned IndiGo’s senior leadership, directing them to take immediate corrective measures. These include improving operational resilience, strengthening crew and ground handling coordination, and ensuring strict compliance with passenger rights regulations.

IndiGo, India’s largest domestic airline by market share, has faced increased scrutiny in recent months as air travel demand continues to rise sharply. The airline is expected to submit a detailed compliance report to the DGCA, outlining steps taken to prevent a recurrence of such disruptions.

The DGCA reiterated that it will continue to closely monitor airline operations and will not hesitate to take strict action to safeguard passenger interests and maintain safety and service standards across the aviation sector.
