Elon Musk Backs H-1B Visa for Skilled Indians, Warns Against ‘Gaming the System’

San Francisco: Tech mogul Elon Musk has thrown his weight behind the contribution of skilled Indian immigrants to the United States, acknowledging that “America has benefitted immensely from talented Indians” through the H-1B visa program.

Speaking on entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath’s WTF podcast, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX expressed his strong support for the visa pathway for high-skilled workers, while simultaneously cautioning against the misuse of the system by certain companies.

Benefit of Talented Immigrants

Musk emphasized that the influx of highly talented individuals is crucial for the U.S. economy and for companies like his own.

“My direct observation is that there’s always a scarcity of talented people,” Musk stated. “We have a lot of difficulty finding enough talented people to get these difficult tasks done. And so more talented people would be good.”

This endorsement of skilled worker immigration aligns with his previous remarks where he advocated for attracting and retaining global talent to fill critical skill gaps in the nation.

Call to Stop H-1B Misuse

Despite his overall support for the program, Musk highlighted instances where the H-1B system has been exploited. He noted that some companies, particularly outsourcing firms, have managed to “game the system” to cut operational costs.

“Some companies out there, it’s sort of, they’re making it more of a cost thing, where it’s like, okay, if they can employ someone for a fraction of the cost of an American citizen, then, I guess, these other companies would hire people just to save costs,” he remarked.

Musk’s key recommendation was clear: “We need to stop the gaming of the system, you know? But I’m certainly not in the school of thought that we should shut down the H-1B Program.”

He warned that conservative voices advocating for the outright termination of the H-1B program fail to realize the detrimental impact this would have on the country. Musk’s own companies, he pointed out, focus on attracting the most talented people in the world and pay “way above average,” indicating that their utilization of the visa program is for high-level skill acquisition rather than cost-cutting.
