In a significant shift in global energy expectations, fossil fuels are regaining ground as projections for peak demand have been pushed further into the 2030s, raising fresh concerns about the pace of the energy transition and climate commitments.
According to recent assessments, global demand for oil, gas, and coal is proving more resilient than earlier forecasts suggested. Slower-than-expected adoption of renewable energy, rising energy needs in developing economies, and concerns over energy security have contributed to revised timelines for when fossil fuel consumption is expected to peak.
Energy analysts note that while clean energy investments continue to grow, they are not yet scaling fast enough to offset rising demand driven by industrial expansion, urbanisation, and population growth—particularly in Asia and Africa. In several countries, coal and gas have also seen renewed support as governments seek reliable and affordable energy sources amid geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions.
The rebound of fossil fuels has been further reinforced by higher-than-anticipated oil and gas demand for transport, petrochemicals, and power generation. Meanwhile, challenges such as grid infrastructure constraints, storage limitations, and intermittent renewable supply have slowed the displacement of conventional fuels in some regions.
Climate experts warn that delaying peak fossil fuel demand could jeopardise global targets to limit temperature rise. They stress that pushing the peak into the 2030s would require steeper and more disruptive emissions cuts later, increasing economic and social risks.
At the same time, policymakers argue that the transition must balance climate goals with economic stability and energy security. Several governments have reiterated commitments to net-zero targets while acknowledging that fossil fuels will continue to play a role during the transition period.
The shifting outlook underscores the growing gap between climate ambitions and real-world energy trends. As the world navigates competing priorities, the coming decade is likely to be critical in determining whether clean energy can regain momentum—or whether fossil fuels will dominate the global energy mix for longer than expected.
