India’s Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has issued an apology following controversy over his recent remarks that drew criticism from sections of the public and industry stakeholders.
Speaking to reporters, the minister clarified that the government remains “open-minded” and receptive to feedback while shaping policy in emerging sectors, particularly in technology and digital regulation. He acknowledged that his earlier comments may have been interpreted differently than intended and emphasized that the administration values constructive dialogue.
Vaishnaw stressed that India’s regulatory approach aims to balance innovation with accountability. He added that policymakers are actively consulting startups, global technology companies, and civil society groups to ensure rules do not hinder growth while still protecting users.
The apology comes amid heightened debate over how India should regulate rapidly evolving digital platforms, artificial intelligence tools, and online services. Industry bodies had earlier raised concerns about potential over-regulation and called for wider stakeholder consultations before finalizing frameworks.
Reassuring businesses, the minister reiterated that the government’s objective is to create a predictable and supportive ecosystem. “We are open to listening and improving,” he said, adding that feedback mechanisms would continue to be strengthened.
