According to a warning from a Harvard-trained physician, colon cancer — long considered a disease of older adults — is increasingly affecting younger populations. Rising cases among young people mean that early detection and awareness are more important than ever.
The doctor highlights five key symptoms that young adults should not ignore:
1. Blood in stool — Bright red or dark blood in stool may be an early indication of colon cancer.
2. Changes in stool shape or size — If stools become unusually narrow or change shape, it could signal a tumor that is obstructing the colon.
3. Persistent abdominal pain or cramps — Chronic stomach pain, cramps, or discomfort should not be dismissed as mere digestion problems.
4. Unintentional weight loss — Losing weight without any change in diet or lifestyle can be a serious warning sign.
5. Constant fatigue — Extreme tiredness or weakness, especially when not relieved by rest, could indicate internal blood loss or iron-deficiency anemia caused by colon cancer.
Medical experts caution that these symptoms—especially if persistent—should not be ignored. Often, early signs are mistaken for common conditions like hemorrhoids or mild digestive issues.
Recent research shows that colon cancer cases among younger individuals are rising globally. One study noted that people born in 1990 have nearly double the risk compared to those born in 1950.
Doctors emphasise the importance of paying attention to warning signs, seeking prompt medical advice, and not assuming one is “too young” for colon cancer. Early detection significantly improves the chances of successful treatment.
As lifestyle changes — including poor diet, physical inactivity, obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption — may contribute to this rise among younger people, experts urge adopting healthier habits as a preventive measure.
