AHMEDABAD — Following India’s historic triumph in the 2026 T20 World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) released its latest player rankings on Wednesday, revealing a significant shake-up at the top. The most notable mover is Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who has climbed two places to claim a career-best world No. 2 ranking.

Kishan’s ascent marks a landmark moment for Indian cricket, as he joins teammate Abhishek Sharma at the pinnacle of the batting charts. This is the first time in history that two Indian batters have occupied the top two spots in the T20I format simultaneously.

A World Cup to Remember

Kishan’s rise is the direct result of a prolific World Cup campaign where he amassed 317 runs over nine matches. His performance was characterized by explosive strike rates and high-pressure contributions:

The Final Heroics: Kishan smashed a match-winning 54 off just 25 balls against New Zealand, helping India secure their third T20 World Cup title.

The Semifinal Spark: He provided a vital 39 runs off 18 balls to dismantle the England bowling attack.

Emotional Resilience: His performance in the final was particularly poignant, as it came just 24 hours after he received news of a tragic family loss. Dedicated to his late cousin, his innings played a central role in India’s 96-run victory.

The Battle for Number One

The gap at the very top is now razor-thin. Abhishek Sharma retained his No. 1 position with 875 rating points following his own blistering half-century in the final. Kishan sits just four points behind at 871, effectively putting the top spot within striking distance in India’s next T20I series.

Other Major Moves

The updated rankings also saw several other Indian stars rewarded for their World Cup “double” (winning back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2026):

Sanju Samson: Jumped 18 places to a career-high 22nd after a stellar tournament finish.

Jasprit Bumrah: Moved up to 6th in the bowling rankings after leading the wicket charts.

Rashid Khan: The Afghanistan captain reclaimed the No. 1 bowling spot, displacing India’s Varun Chakravarthy, who slipped to second.

With the IPL 2026 season just weeks away, all eyes will be on the “left-handed duo” of Sharma and Kishan to see if the world No. 2 can finally overtake his teammate for the crown of the world’s best T20I batter.
