India is making a determined push to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with preparations underway “with full strength,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, underlining the country’s ambition to stage one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Addressing a gathering linked to sports development and infrastructure, the Prime Minister said hosting the Olympics would mark a transformative moment for India, not only in terms of global sporting recognition but also for economic growth, urban development and youth engagement. He stressed that India is no longer just aspiring to host mega sporting events, but is actively working towards creating the necessary ecosystem to do so.
The Prime Minister highlighted that over the past decade, India has significantly expanded its sports infrastructure, improved athlete support systems and strengthened governance in sports administration. Initiatives such as Khelo India, Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), and large-scale investments in stadiums, training centres and sports science were cited as examples of India’s growing seriousness about sports.
India has already conveyed its interest to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is expected to submit a formal bid in the coming years. Ahmedabad is widely seen as a leading contender to host the Games, with plans reportedly centred around developing world-class venues, athlete villages and transport networks, while also leveraging existing infrastructure.
The Prime Minister also emphasised that hosting the Olympics would inspire millions of young Indians to take up sports professionally and promote a culture of fitness across the country. “Sports have the power to unite the nation and showcase India’s talent and organisational capabilities to the world,” he said.
If successful, the 2036 Olympics would be the first to be hosted by India, placing the country alongside major global hosts and marking a historic milestone in its sporting journey.
