New Delhi: Amid escalating unrest in Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has initiated preparations to evacuate Indian nationals from the country, as concerns grow over the safety of foreign citizens caught in the turmoil. According to official sources, the first evacuation flight is being readied as part of contingency plans, with further operations to be rolled out depending on the ground situation.
The unrest, marked by widespread protests and clashes in several Iranian cities, has led to heightened security measures and disruptions to normal life. In response, the Indian government has been closely monitoring developments through its embassy in Tehran and consulates in other regions, maintaining constant contact with Indian citizens residing or working in Iran.
MEA officials said advisories have already been issued, urging Indians in Iran to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and stay in touch with Indian diplomatic missions. A helpline and emergency contact numbers have been activated to assist those seeking information or immediate help.
Sources indicated that priority for evacuation would be given to students, pilgrims, women, and those facing medical or other urgent difficulties. The exact number of Indians to be evacuated and the schedule of flights will depend on airspace availability and coordination with Iranian authorities.
The MEA reiterated that the safety and well-being of Indian nationals abroad remains the government’s top priority. It added that India is engaging with relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth and secure evacuation process, similar to past operations conducted in conflict-hit regions.
Further updates are expected as the situation in Iran evolves and evacuation plans are finalised.
