In a significant boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a state-of-the-art semiconductor plant set up by Micron Technology in Sanand, Gujarat. The project marks a major milestone in the country’s push to become a global hub for electronics manufacturing and chip production.
The facility, located in Sanand near Ahmedabad, is part of Micron’s multi-billion-dollar investment plan in India. The plant will focus on assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) of semiconductor chips, catering to both domestic and international markets.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi said the launch of the semiconductor unit reflects India’s growing stature in the global technology supply chain. He highlighted that the project would generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities and accelerate the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem in the country.
The Government of India has been actively promoting chip manufacturing under its semiconductor incentive schemes, aiming to reduce dependency on imports and strengthen self-reliance in critical technologies. Gujarat, in particular, has emerged as a preferred destination for semiconductor investments due to its infrastructure, industrial ecosystem, and policy support.
Micron’s entry into India is expected to attract further investments from global chipmakers and technology firms. Industry experts believe the Sanand facility will not only enhance India’s manufacturing capabilities but also support sectors such as automotive, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and artificial intelligence.
With the inauguration of this plant, India takes a decisive step toward positioning itself as a key player in the global semiconductor value chain, signaling strong momentum for its “Make in India” and digital growth initiatives.
