New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday delivered a strong warning to Pakistan, asserting that India retains the “right to defend its people” if good neighbourly relations are not respected. His remarks underline New Delhi’s hardened stance on national security and cross-border threats amid continuing tensions between the two countries.
Speaking at a public forum, Jaishankar said that while India remains committed to peaceful coexistence and stable relations with its neighbours, such ties cannot be one-sided. “If there is no good neighbourliness, if our people are attacked or threatened, then we have every right to defend them,” he said, reiterating India’s position that security and sovereignty are non-negotiable.
The external affairs minister emphasised that terrorism and cross-border violence have severely damaged the prospects of normal relations with Pakistan. He noted that India has repeatedly conveyed that dialogue and diplomacy can only progress in an environment free from terror, a message that New Delhi has consistently raised at bilateral and international platforms.
Jaishankar also highlighted that India’s foreign policy is guided by realism and responsibility, balancing outreach with firmness. “Peace is our preference, but peace cannot come at the cost of our citizens’ lives,” he said, adding that India expects neighbouring countries to act responsibly and respect mutual interests.
His comments come at a time when India has been strengthening its diplomatic engagements globally while remaining vigilant about regional security challenges. Observers say the statement signals continuity in India’s approach towards Pakistan — openness to normal relations, but zero tolerance for actions that threaten national security.
India and Pakistan have had strained relations for years, primarily due to issues related to terrorism and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Jaishankar’s remarks reaffirm New Delhi’s stance that any improvement in ties depends on Islamabad’s willingness to ensure peace and stability along the border.
The government has repeatedly maintained that protecting Indian citizens remains its top priority, and any threat to national security will be met with an appropriate response.
