Iran Sets Tough Preconditions for Talks with U.S., Links Lebanon Ceasefire and Asset Release

Source The Hindu

Tehran: The ongoing Iran–Israel conflict has taken a new diplomatic turn as Iran’s parliament speaker has laid down strict conditions for entering negotiations with the United States, further complicating an already fragile ceasefire in the region.

According to official statements, Iran has demanded a complete ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of its frozen financial assets before any formal talks with the U.S. can begin. These conditions come amid rising tensions following continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon, which Tehran considers a violation of the recently announced truce.

Ceasefire Under Pressure

The ceasefire agreement between Iran and the U.S. is already under strain due to disagreements over its scope. While Iran and some mediators insist that Lebanon must be included, the U.S. and Israel maintain that the truce does not extend to Lebanese territory.

Recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, which reportedly caused significant damage, have intensified the dispute and raised doubts over the viability of upcoming peace talks. Tehran has warned that continuing negotiations under such conditions would be “unreasonable.”

High Stakes Diplomacy Ahead

Negotiations between U.S. and Iranian representatives are expected soon, possibly mediated by international partners. However, Iran’s insistence on preconditions—particularly regarding Lebanon and its blocked funds—poses a major hurdle.

Global powers are closely monitoring the situation, as failure to stabilize the ceasefire could lead to broader regional escalation, impacting oil supply routes and international security.

Conclusion

With both sides holding firm on key issues, the path to peace remains uncertain. Iran’s latest demands signal a strategic effort to link regional conflicts with broader diplomatic and economic goals, making upcoming negotiations critical for the future of the Middle East.
