NEW DELHI — India is bracing for a significant disruption on Thursday, February 12, 2026, as a coalition of over 10 central trade unions and various farmers’ organizations, including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), have called for a Bharat Bandh.
The 24-hour strike is a protest against the Union Government’s four new labour codes, the proposed India-US interim trade framework, and demands for the restoration of MGNREGA. Organizers claim that upwards of 30 crore workers across 600 districts could participate, potentially paralyzing key public sectors.
What’s Closed or Likely to be Disrupted
While the impact will vary by state, heavy disruptions are expected in Kerala, Odisha, Assam, and Karnataka.
Banking Services: Public sector bank unions (including AIBEA and BEFI) have joined the strike. While the RBI hasn’t declared a holiday, expect delays in cheque clearing, cash deposits, and branch services.
Public Transport: State-run bus services (like KSRTC), auto-rickshaws, and taxis may stay off the roads in several regions. “Chakka Jams” (road blockades) are expected on major highways.
Educational Institutions: Many schools and colleges in strike-prone states are likely to remain shut to ensure student safety, though no nationwide closure has been mandated.
Government Offices: Attendance is expected to be thin as several government employee unions are participating.
Markets and Factories: Local markets, shops, and industrial units in trade union strongholds are expected to suspend operations for the day.
What Remains Open
To minimize public hardship, essential services have been exempted from the strike:
Healthcare: Hospitals, pharmacies, and ambulance services will function normally.
Emergency Services: Fire departments and police will remain on high alert.
Essential Supplies: Milk and vegetable distribution, as well as newspaper delivery, are unlikely to be affected.
Connectivity: Airports and train services will operate, though travelers are advised to leave early due to potential traffic snarls on the way to stations.
Digital Services: ATMs and online banking platforms are expected to remain functional.
Travel Advisory for Citizens
Commuters in major cities like Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, and Kochi are advised to monitor local news for real-time updates on road blockades. If you have urgent banking or administrative work, it is recommended to complete it either today or postpone it until Friday.
Note: Private sector offices and IT companies may continue to operate, though many have issued “work from home” advisories for employees in affected regions.
