In a dramatic turn of events at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Pakistan were eliminated from the tournament midway through their clash against Sri Lanka, with results elsewhere confirming New Zealand’s qualification for the semi-finals.
Batting first at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, Pakistan posted an imposing 212/8 in their 20 overs. The top order laid a strong platform, while late fireworks pushed the total beyond the 200-run mark, giving their bowlers a competitive target to defend.
However, qualification scenarios meant Pakistan needed not just a win, but a comprehensive margin to stay in contention. As Sri Lanka mounted a steady chase, the required net run rate equation slipped out of Pakistan’s reach. Midway through the second innings, it became mathematically impossible for Pakistan to advance, officially ending their campaign.
Sri Lanka’s response was powered by a composed half-century from Pavan Rathnayake, who anchored the innings under pressure. Skipper Dasun Shanaka provided acceleration in the middle overs, keeping the chase alive despite regular wickets. Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi attempted to claw things back, but the net run rate permutations were already settled elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the result ensured that New Zealand national cricket team advanced to the semi-finals, benefiting from superior net run rate and consistent performances throughout the group stage.
Pakistan’s early exit marks a disappointing end to what began as a promising campaign. Despite moments of brilliance, inconsistency and crucial margins ultimately cost them a place in the knockout stages.
The focus now shifts to the semi-final lineup as the tournament heads into its decisive phase.
