In a controversial incident that has sparked outrage in Pakistan’s sporting circles, a Pakistani kabaddi player has been banned indefinitely after he was seen wearing an Indian jersey and waving the Indian national flag during a public appearance.
According to officials familiar with the matter, the incident occurred during a local kabaddi event where videos surfaced on social media showing the player donning India’s blue jersey emblazoned with national symbols and proudly waving the tricolour. The visuals quickly went viral, triggering strong reactions from fans, sports authorities, and political commentators in Pakistan.
Following the backlash, the Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) took swift disciplinary action, announcing an indefinite ban on the player for what it termed as “conduct unbecoming of a national athlete” and a “serious violation of federation rules.” In a statement, the PKF said that representing or promoting another country’s national symbols without authorisation was unacceptable and harmed the image of Pakistani sports.
“The player’s actions go against the code of conduct and the values expected from athletes who represent Pakistan at national and international levels,” the federation stated, adding that no timeline had been set for reviewing the ban.
Sources said the player attempted to defend himself by claiming the act was done “in good spirit” and without political intent. However, the explanation failed to convince the authorities amid mounting public pressure.
The incident has also reignited debates on nationalism in sports and the responsibilities of athletes in politically sensitive regions. While some social media users criticised the harsh punishment, others supported the ban, arguing that national athletes must be mindful of public sentiment and diplomatic sensitivities.
