NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ) at the Delhi airport today, January 19, 2026, marking a significant moment in the burgeoning “brotherly” ties between the two nations.
The high-profile visit, though brief, resulted in the signing of several transformative agreements across strategic sectors, including nuclear energy, space exploration, and artificial intelligence.
A Warm Reception and High-Stakes Talks
In a special gesture reflecting their close personal rapport, PM Modi greeted President MBZ with a warm embrace on the tarmac before the two leaders traveled together to the bilateral meeting venue.
“Went to the airport to welcome my brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan… His visit illustrates the importance he attaches to a strong India-UAE friendship,” PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Key Agreements Signed
The bilateral discussions culminated in several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that chart “new frontiers” for the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership:
Nuclear Energy: Building on India’s recent policy shift to allow private and international participation in the nuclear sector, the two nations agreed to explore partnerships in advanced nuclear technologies. This includes the development of large nuclear reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as well as cooperation in maintenance and safety.
Space Exploration: Both sides signed pacts to deepen collaboration in satellite technology and joint space missions, building on previous successful engagements between ISRO and the UAE Space Agency.
Artificial Intelligence & Digital Infrastructure: AI was identified as a priority sector. The UAE confirmed high-level participation in India’s upcoming AI Summit in February 2026. Discussions were also held regarding the establishment of a “Digital or Data Embassy” to secure cross-border data flows.
Trade & Economy: The leaders set an ambitious target to double bilateral trade to $200 billion by 2032, fueled by the success of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Strategic Significance
This visit marks Sheikh Mohamed’s third official trip to India as President and his fifth in the last decade. It comes at a crucial time of regional volatility in West Asia, where India and the UAE have emerged as stabilizing partners.
Beyond energy and tech, PM Modi presented the UAE President with a Royal Carved Wooden Jhula (swing) from Gujarat, an intricate hand-carved gift symbolizing the cultural depth of the relationship.
