Rift Out in the Open? Digvijaya Singh Stirs Row With Photo of PM Modi, RSS Praise

Source India Today

A political controversy erupted on Thursday after senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh shared a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders and praised the organisation, triggering sharp reactions within his own party and from political rivals.

Singh’s social media post, which highlighted the role of the RSS in shaping the prime minister’s political journey, was seen by many as a departure from the Congress’ long-standing criticism of the Sangh Parivar. The veteran leader’s remarks quickly went viral, sparking speculation about visible differences within the Congress on how to approach the BJP and its ideological parent.

While Singh later clarified that his post was meant to underline historical facts rather than endorse the RSS, the damage had already been done. Several Congress leaders distanced themselves from the remarks, reiterating the party’s ideological opposition to the RSS and accusing the BJP of undermining constitutional values. Some within the party privately termed the post “avoidable” at a time when the opposition is attempting to project unity.

The BJP, meanwhile, seized the opportunity to target the Congress. Party leaders accused the opposition of double standards, claiming Singh’s comments exposed internal contradictions and a lack of clarity in Congress’ stance towards the RSS and Prime Minister Modi.

Political observers say the episode has once again brought internal debates within the Congress into the public domain, raising questions about message discipline and strategic coherence ahead of key electoral battles.

As reactions continue to pour in, Digvijaya Singh’s post has added another layer to the increasingly charged political discourse, highlighting the sensitivities around ideology, leadership, and opposition unity in India’s polarised political landscape.
