Shubman Gill Omitted from India’s T20 World Cup Squad in Major Selection Shock

New Delhi, India – December 20, 2025:

In a stunning decision ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, India’s selectors have dropped Shubman Gill from the 15-member squad announced on Saturday, raising eyebrows across the cricketing world. The left-handed batter, who currently leads India in Tests and ODIs, was omitted despite his status as vice-captain in recent T20Is.

Gill’s omission came as part of a selection strategy that prioritises team balance and specific combinations over individual stature, according to BCCI officials. The selection panel, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, cited a prolonged dip in Gill’s T20 form and the need for flexible batting options as key factors behind the decision.

With no fifty in his last 18 T20I innings and a recent struggle to convert starts into big scores, Gill’s recent returns in the format have been underwhelming, leading to questions about his role in India’s shortest format.

Squad Changes and New Appointments

The selectors have named Ishan Kishan back in the squad following a strong showing in domestic T20 cricket, including a century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson is also preferred as an opening option, giving India two keeper-batsmen in the top order.

All-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed the new vice-captain for the T20 World Cup, replacing Gill in the leadership setup. The balance of the squad also reflects a mix of experience and youth, featuring frontline pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, along with spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy.

Official Perspective and Team Strategy

Agarkar emphasised that the selection was “about combinations” rather than discrediting Gill’s overall ability. He stressed that having two wicketkeepers who can open gives the team flexibility at the top of the order.

Team captain Suryakumar Yadav echoed this sentiment, saying the decision was based on defined roles and strategic clarity rather than merely form. He also underlined the team management’s belief in Gill’s quality, suggesting the batter could be reintegrated into future plans.

Reactions and Aftermath

The announcement has triggered significant debate among fans and former players. Some former cricketers expressed surprise, given Gill’s talent and leadership pedigree, while others defended the selectors’ choice to prioritise specialists who fit the team’s tactical framework.

The Times of India

The T20 World Cup is set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026, with the Indian squad also scheduled to play a five-match T20 series against New Zealand in January as part of their final preparations.
