Starlink Reveals Premium Pricing for India Residential Service Ahead of Launch

Source The Hindu

New Delhi, December 8, 2025 — Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, has moved closer to its commercial debut in India by officially revealing the pricing for its residential monthly subscription plan. The updated details on the Starlink India website indicate a premium positioning for the service, which aims to provide high-speed connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

 Subscription and Hardware Costs

The new plan is set at ₹8,600 per month for residential users. This monthly fee is in addition to a substantial one-time cost of ₹34,000 for the necessary hardware kit.

The hardware kit, which is essential for receiving the satellite signal, typically includes the Starlink dish antenna, a mount, cables, and a Wi-Fi router.

Monthly Subscription: ₹8,600

One-Time Hardware Cost: ₹34,000

The pricing is notably higher than most existing fibre-optic and traditional broadband services in major Indian metro areas, positioning Starlink as a premium alternative, at least initially, for customers with limited connectivity options.

Key Features of the Residential Plan

Starlink’s residential package is designed to address connectivity gaps with a set of robust features:

Unlimited Data: The plan promises unlimited data with no usage caps or throttling.

30-Day Trial: New customers will be offered a 30-day trial period to test the service’s performance.

Reliability: The company claims the system is engineered to deliver over 99.9% uptime and is designed to operate effectively in all weather conditions.

Setup: The hardware is described as having a plug-and-play setup to simplify installation.

While the residential pricing has been finalized, details regarding the subscription cost for the higher-speed Business-tier plan have yet to be disclosed.

 Impact and Regulatory Status

Starlink’s entry is poised to be a game-changer for digital connectivity in India’s vast rural and remote geographies, aligning with the company’s global mission to serve users where traditional broadband is unavailable or unreliable. Starlink’s India market access director previously stated that serving rural users is “fundamental to the mission of Starlink.”

The company is preparing its ground infrastructure, with reports of gateway earth stations being set up in multiple Indian cities, including Mumbai, Noida, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.

Despite the published pricing, Starlink’s official availability map still indicates that the service launch is pending regulatory approval. However, the firm had reportedly received a key five-year license from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) earlier this year, signaling that full commercial operations may be imminent. Starlink is expected to compete directly with other players in the burgeoning satellite communication sector, such as OneWeb and Jio-SES.
