Study Finds Rising Child Leprosy Cases Among Chennai’s Migrant Worker Communities

Source India Today

Chennai, December 12 — A recent health study has raised concerns after identifying a noticeable rise in leprosy cases among children living in migrant worker settlements across Chennai. The findings, compiled by public health researchers and local NGOs working in urban clusters, highlight gaps in early diagnosis, awareness, and access to healthcare among vulnerable communities.

According to the study, several paediatric cases were detected in densely populated areas where migrant labourers from northern and eastern states reside. Health experts note that cramped living conditions, limited sanitation, and delayed medical attention have contributed to the spread of the bacterial infection, which is curable if treated early.

Officials revealed that the majority of the affected children had prolonged exposure to undiagnosed adult cases within their households. “Leprosy does not spread easily, but when early symptoms are ignored due to lack of awareness, it increases the risk of transmission—especially among children,” said a senior dermatologist involved in the study.

The Tamil Nadu Health Department has initiated intensified screening drives across high-risk zones and is coordinating with community health workers to identify early symptoms such as skin patches, numbness, and nerve involvement. Awareness campaigns on preventive care and stigma reduction are also being rolled out.

While Tamil Nadu has made significant progress in controlling leprosy in recent decades, experts warn that migration patterns and socio-economic disparities continue to pose challenges. The study calls for improved living conditions, regular health camps, and targeted interventions to ensure that children in migrant communities receive timely treatment and support.

Authorities have urged families to seek immediate medical attention if any signs of leprosy appear, stressing that early detection remains the most effective tool in preventing disability and stopping further spread.
