KOCHI — Tamil superstar Suriya arrived in Kochi on Sunday morning to pay his final respects to the legendary Malayalam actor, screenwriter, and filmmaker Sreenivasan, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 69.
The Kanguva star visited Sreenivasan’s residence in Kandanad, Tripunithura, where the mortal remains were kept for public viewing before the final rites. Suriya, visibly moved, spent time with the grieving family, including Sreenivasan’s sons, Vineeth and Dhyan Sreenivasan, offering his deepest condolences.
‘A Fan Since Childhood’
Speaking to the media outside the residence, Suriya expressed his profound admiration for the veteran artist’s contribution to cinema.
“I have been a great admirer of Sreenivasan sir since my childhood. Even before I entered the film industry, I followed his work closely,” Suriya said. “When I heard the news of his passing while I was in Kochi, I felt I must come and see him one last time. His writings and the messages in his films will remain with us forever.”
Suriya further noted that Sreenivasan’s ability to blend sharp social satire with relatable human emotions made him a unique figure in Indian cinema.
A Legend’s Final Journey
Sreenivasan, a titan of the Malayalam film industry with over 225 films to his credit, passed away on December 20, 2025, due to health complications while being transported for dialysis.
The funeral took place Sunday morning at 10:00 AM with full state honors. The event saw a massive turnout from the film fraternity and the public alike:
Industry Giants: Superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty paid their respects at the Ernakulam Town Hall earlier.
Political Presence: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other state leaders attended the final rites.
The Legacy: Sreenivasan is survived by his wife, Vimala, and his sons, who are both established figures in the industry.
The “Karuppu” actor’s gesture of traveling to pay homage highlights the cross-border respect Sreenivasan commanded, transcending linguistic barriers through his iconic characters like ‘Dasen’ and his masterful screenwriting.
