The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has rejected claims that it was given a January 21 deadline by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to confirm its stance on hosting the upcoming T20 World Cup, amid growing uncertainty over the tournament’s venue.
In an official statement, the BCB clarified that no such ultimatum was communicated by the ICC and said reports suggesting otherwise were “misleading.” The board reiterated its long-standing demand that the ICC seriously consider an alternative venue, citing concerns related to logistics, scheduling, and prevailing conditions.
“The BCB has not received any formal deadline from the ICC regarding January 21,” the board said, adding that discussions with the global body are still ongoing. “Our position remains unchanged — the option of an alternative venue must be evaluated in the interest of all stakeholders.”
The venue issue has become a major point of contention in recent weeks, with several member boards reportedly expressing concerns about hosting arrangements. While the ICC has maintained that preparations are on track, it is also understood to be exploring contingency plans should the need arise.
Sources indicate that the ICC is keen to resolve the matter quickly to avoid disruptions to team preparations, broadcast commitments, and commercial agreements. However, the BCB has stressed that any decision must prioritize player safety, operational feasibility, and the overall quality of the tournament.
As talks continue behind closed doors, the ICC is expected to hold further consultations with participating boards in the coming days. A final decision on the venue is likely to be announced once a consensus is reached, as the countdown to the T20 World Cup gathers pace.
