At least ten soldiers lost their lives after an Indian Army vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Tuesday, officials said. The tragic accident occurred in a remote hilly area while the soldiers were on duty.
According to preliminary information, the vehicle was part of a routine movement when it skidded off a narrow mountain road and fell into the gorge. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be officially confirmed, but difficult terrain, sharp turns, and adverse road conditions are suspected to have played a role.
Local residents and security forces rushed to the spot soon after the incident and launched rescue operations. However, due to the steep terrain and depth of the gorge, rescue efforts were challenging. The bodies of the soldiers were later recovered and shifted to a nearby medical facility.
Senior Army officials expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. In a statement, the Indian Army conveyed its condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers and said all necessary assistance would be provided to them.
“The Indian Army mourns the loss of brave soldiers in this unfortunate accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this difficult time,” the statement said.
Authorities have ordered an inquiry to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Meanwhile, security forces in the region have been advised to exercise extra caution while travelling on mountainous routes, especially during adverse weather conditions.
Doda district, located in the Chenab region of Jammu and Kashmir, is known for its rugged terrain and narrow roads, which often pose risks for vehicular movement, particularly for heavy and military vehicles.
