BENGALURU – The Indian business community is in shock following the sudden death of Dr. Roy C.J., the 57-year-old founder and chairman of the Confident Group. Roy was found dead at his office near Richmond Circle on Friday afternoon, in what authorities are investigating as a case of apparent suicide.

Details of the Incident

According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred around 3:15 PM on January 30, 2026. Staff members at the office reportedly heard a gunshot and rushed to Roy’s private cabin, where they discovered him lying in a pool of blood.

Cause of Death: Preliminary assessments indicate a self-inflicted gunshot wound from his licensed firearm.

Medical Response: He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital and later moved to Narayana Hospital, where he was declared “brought dead.”

Ongoing Investigation: The Bengaluru Police, led by Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, have registered a case. Forensic teams (SOCO) have inspected the site, and a post-mortem examination is pending to confirm the final cause of death.

Pressure from Federal Agencies

The tragedy unfolded as federal agencies were intensifying their scrutiny of the conglomerate. Sources indicate that the Income Tax Department had been conducting coordinated searches at various locations linked to the Confident Group over the past three days.

Reports suggest that Roy was under significant stress due to these raids, which were part of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities. Some reports also mention presence of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in recent days, though the police have yet to officially link the investigation to his death.

A Multifaceted Career

CJ Roy was a prominent figure not only in the real estate sector but also in the entertainment industry. Under his leadership, the Confident Group grew into a massive conglomerate with operations across India, the UAE, and the US.

Real Estate: Delivered over 200 projects, making it one of the largest developers in South India.

Entertainment: Produced major Malayalam films, including the Mohanlal-starrer Casanovva, and served as the title sponsor for Bigg Boss Malayalam.

Philanthropy: Known for his scholarship programs, recently awarding ₹1 crore to underprivileged students.

“He was a hands-on leader who built an empire from the ground up. His loss leaves a massive void in the industry,” said a business associate in Bengaluru.

The police are currently in contact with Roy’s family members, who were reportedly abroad at the time of the incident.
