Former US President Donald Trump has invited India to be part of a proposed international “Board of Peace” aimed at stabilising Gaza and shaping its post-conflict governance, sources familiar with the discussions said on Friday.
According to the sources, the idea is part of a broader framework being explored by Trump’s team to involve select global and regional stakeholders in ensuring security, humanitarian assistance and political stability in Gaza once active hostilities subside. India’s potential role is seen as significant due to its growing global stature, strong diplomatic ties across West Asia, and its consistent position in favour of dialogue and a two-state solution.
While no formal proposal has been made public, sources indicated that the suggested “Board of Peace” would include countries viewed as relatively neutral and capable of contributing to reconstruction, institution-building and humanitarian relief. India’s experience in peacekeeping missions, development assistance and diplomatic engagement in conflict-prone regions is believed to have weighed in its favour.
Officials in New Delhi have not issued any official response to the reported invitation. India has traditionally supported peace efforts in the Middle East while maintaining balanced relations with Israel, Palestine and key Arab nations. New Delhi has also repeatedly called for an immediate cessation of violence, unimpeded humanitarian access and a negotiated settlement to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The concept of a Gaza-focused international oversight or peace mechanism has gained traction amid continuing instability and concerns over governance, security and rebuilding efforts in the territory. However, analysts caution that any such initiative would face significant diplomatic, political and on-ground challenges, particularly without broad international consensus and the involvement of regional actors.
Sources emphasised that discussions, if any, are at a preliminary stage and would depend on evolving political dynamics in the United States, developments in the Gaza conflict and consultations with multiple stakeholders before taking any concrete shape.
