The United States has approved a new foreign military sale to Pakistan, authorizing advanced technology upgrades and a comprehensive support package for the country’s F-16 fighter jet fleet, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to the notification issued to Congress, the proposed sale includes modern avionics, precision-navigation components, secure communications systems, and an extended maintenance and logistics support program. The package also covers technical training, spare parts, and software enhancements aimed at keeping Pakistan’s existing F-16 aircraft operational for years to come.
U.S. officials emphasized that the deal does not involve any new aircraft or weapons systems, but is focused solely on sustainment. The approval, they said, is intended to strengthen Pakistan’s counter-terrorism capabilities and ensure interoperability in regional security operations.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals of the United States by improving the security of a key partner engaged in counter-terrorism and regional stability efforts,” the notice stated.
The decision marks another step in the defense cooperation between Washington and Islamabad, following previous sustainment approvals in recent years. The U.S. clarified that the upgrade package will not alter the military balance in South Asia.
However, the development is likely to draw attention in New Delhi, where similar approvals in the past have triggered concerns regarding advanced U.S. support for Pakistan’s air combat fleet. India has previously stated that such decisions could have implications for regional security dynamics.
Pakistan has long relied on its fleet of F-16s as the backbone of its air defense and counter-terror operations. The latest U.S. support package, officials in Islamabad said, will help enhance mission readiness and extend the service life of the fighter jets.
The agreement will now proceed through final administrative steps before implementation begins in coordination with U.S. defense contractors.
