New Delhi, February 15: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday commended India for hosting the Global AI Impact Summit, describing the country as a “very successful emerging economy” and a key player in shaping the future of responsible artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the summit, Guterres said India’s rapid digital transformation, expanding innovation ecosystem and large-scale public digital infrastructure make it uniquely positioned to guide global discussions on ethical and inclusive AI development. He stressed that artificial intelligence must benefit humanity while minimizing risks such as misinformation, bias and job disruption.
The UN chief highlighted India’s role in bridging the technological gap between developed and developing nations, noting that affordable digital services and widespread connectivity initiatives have enabled millions to participate in the digital economy. According to him, the country’s approach demonstrates how emerging economies can leverage technology for social and economic progress.
Government leaders and global tech representatives attending the summit emphasized cooperation in creating international rules for safe AI deployment. Discussions focused on regulation, data protection, innovation and the need to ensure that developing countries are not left behind in the AI revolution.
Guterres urged nations to work together to build a governance framework that encourages innovation while safeguarding human rights, adding that global collaboration will determine whether artificial intelligence becomes a force for equality or division. The summit concluded with a call for stronger partnerships between governments, private sector and academia to ensure responsible AI adoption worldwide.
