Veteran Malayalam Cinema Icon Sreenivasan Dies at 69; Industry Mourns a Legend

Veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Sreenivasan passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the age of 69, bringing an end to an extraordinary cinematic journey that spanned nearly five decades. He died after battling a prolonged illness, succumbing during treatment at a hospital in Thrippunithura, Kochi.

Born on April 6, 1956, in Pattiyam, near Thalassery in Kerala, Sreenivasan began his film career with a small role in P.A. Backer’s Manimuzhakkam in 1976. Over the years, he became one of the most respected figures in Malayalam cinema, known not just for his acting but also for his sharp writing, insightful storytelling, and distinct directorial voice. �

A Legacy of Stories That Resonate

Sreenivasan appeared in more than 225 films, effortlessly portraying a wide range of roles—from subtle comedies to deeply human characters—that made him a beloved face among audiences. As a screenwriter, he penned some of the most iconic films in Malayalam cinema, including Odaruthammava Aalariyam, Sandesam, Nadodikkattu, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Udayananu Tharam, and Njan Prakashan, seamlessly blending humour with sharp social commentary.

Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, were widely acclaimed for their nuanced exploration of middle-class life and earned prestigious honours including a National Film Award and multiple Kerala State Film Awards.

Tributes Pour In Across the Film World

News of Sreenivasan’s passing triggered an outpouring of grief from the film fraternity and fans. Leading actors such as Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and others remembered him for his unparalleled contributions and personal warmth. National icons like Rajinikanth also expressed shock and sorrow, recalling Sreenivasan not only as a talented artist but as a cherished friend and creative influence.

Thousands of admirers paid their last respects as his mortal remains were placed for public viewing at Ernakulam Town Hall, where fans, colleagues and well-wishers gathered to honour his legacy. The Kerala government announced police honours for the farewell service, underscoring the profound impact he had on the cultural landscape.

A Lasting Influence

Sreenivasan’s unique ability to reflect everyday life and social realities with humour and depth made him an integral part of Malayalam cinema’s evolution. His work not only entertained generations but also shaped the sensibilities of filmmakers and audiences alike. Though he is gone, the stories he told and the characters he brought to life will endure. �

He is survived by his wife Vimala and sons Vineeth and Dhyan Sreenivasan, both of whom have followed him into the film industry.
