THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation as a “watershed moment in Kerala’s politics” and personally thanked the voters of the state capital.
The BJP-led NDA secured a historic win in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, ending the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) decades-long dominance over the prestigious civic body.
Key Highlights of the Result
The NDA won 50 of the 101 wards in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The ruling LDF was reduced to 29 seats.
The principal opposition, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), secured 19 seats, with two going to independent candidates.
The majority mark in the Corporation stands at 51.
PM Modi’s Gratitude
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep gratitude, calling the mandate a clear signal from the people.
“Thank you Thiruvananthapuram! The mandate the BJP-NDA got in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is a watershed moment in Kerala’s politics,” the Prime Minister wrote.
He further asserted that the people of the state are certain that their development aspirations can only be addressed by the BJP, and promised the party would work towards the “vibrant city’s growth and boost ‘Ease of Living’ for the people.”
The Prime Minister also extended his thanks to the party workers, acknowledging their sustained grassroots efforts. “My gratitude to all hardworking BJP Karyakartas who have worked among the people, which has ensured a spectacular result in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation,” he added.
Impact on State Politics
The victory in the state capital is seen as a major boost for the BJP-NDA in Kerala, particularly ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. While the Congress-led UDF emerged as the overall frontrunner in the state’s local body polls, the NDA’s win in Thiruvananthapuram, a traditional stronghold for the Left, signals a significant shift in the political landscape of Kerala’s urban centres.
