SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) delivered a performance built on pure grit and defensive resilience, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. The victory officially sends the co-hosts through to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, breaking a string of historic curses along the way.
The high-stakes triumph marks only the second time the U.S. men’s squad has won a World Cup knockout fixture since the tournament structure evolved, and their first victory against European opposition in the knockout stages since 2002.
Balogun Breaks Deadlock Before Dramatic Exit
The Americans seized momentum just as the first half drew to a close. In the 45th minute, captain Tim Ream brought down a long clearance, feeding a sequence that moved through Tyler Adams and Malik Tillman. Tillman threaded a precise ball to forward Folarin Balogun. Displaying phenomenal composure inside the box, Balogun shrugged off two Bosnian defenders and slotted a low, left-footed shot past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to make it 1-0.
However, the afternoon turned chaotic in the 64th minute. Following a VAR review for serious foul play, Balogun was shown a straight red card for an accidental but dangerous high challenge that caught Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle. The dismissal forced the U.S. to play the final 26 minutes—plus a grueling 10 minutes of stoppage time—a man down.
Tillman Sensational as the U.S. Holds Firm
Instead of collapsing under relentless Bosnian pressure, Mauricio Pochettino’s tactical shape remained perfectly disciplined. Goalkeeper Matt Freese, making critical early interventions, anchored a backline that ultimately secured a second tournament clean sheet.
The defining blow arrived in the 82nd minute. After Sergiño Dest drew a foul 20 yards out on the left side of the penalty area, Malik Tillman stepped up to take the direct free kick. Curving a blistering right-footed shot over the wall, Tillman struck it with enough venom to beat Vasilj’s outstretched hand, doubling the U.S. advantage and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Looking Ahead to Seattle
The win marks Pochettino’s third career victory at a World Cup—the most of any head coach in USMNT history—and sets up a highly anticipated Round of 16 showdown against Belgium on Monday in Seattle.
The U.S. will be forced to chase a spot in the quarterfinals without Balogun, their leading tournament goalscorer, who faces a mandatory suspension following his red card.
