A Royal Farce: English Cricket Legends Mock Pakistan’s Mid-Tour Purge and Awkward Meeting with King Charles

Pakistan cricket’s chaotic tour of England has become the subject of ridicule among former English cricketers, who took aim at the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) unprecedented mid-series player clear-out and the team’s awkwardly timed royal engagement.

Following heavy defeats at Headingley and Lord’s that left the visitors trailing 2-0 in the series, the PCB took the extraordinary step of releasing seven players from the squad before the third Test at Edgbaston. Head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were also abruptly removed from their positions.

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, English cricket greats Phil Tufnell, Michael Vaughan, Alastair Cook, and David Lloyd tore into the PCB’s handling of the situation.

“A Disgrace for the Players”

Phil Tufnell heavily criticized the decision to axe players while a tour is still ongoing. “Usually you see one or two leave a tour because they’ve done something wrong in a bar or something. But to actually say, two-thirds of the way through a tour, ‘Right, sorry lads, you’ve got to bugger off’ — I think that’s something else. It’s a disgrace for the players,” he said.

Michael Vaughan echoed the sentiment, noting that the players were seemingly expelled not for disciplinary breaches, but for “plain average cricket”. Vaughan also highlighted the systemic instability within Pakistan cricket, pointing out that the men’s Test team has seen 12 head coach changes since Saqlain Mushtaq lost the job in 2023. Alastair Cook quickly joked that the turnover was “more than Watford managers”.

The King Charles Jibe

The panel found the most surreal aspect of the tour to be a recent royal engagement. Amidst the internal investigations and squad upheavals, members of the Pakistan contingent had an audience with Britain’s King Charles III at Clarence House.

The podcast hosts erupted into laughter at the thought of players meeting the monarch right as the PCB was preparing to fly them home. The panel imagined a farcical scenario playing out during the meet-and-greet.

“They’re all lined up, and you’re being sent home. But just before you go, can you just go and meet the King?” the panel joked. Constructing a fictional royal conversation, one added: “I bet old Charlie’s walked down there and said, ‘Are you the one who’s going home? What have you done wrong?’”.

The discussion concluded with the panel noting that Pakistan cricket’s current state had crossed from mere turmoil into pure satire, likening the situation to a British comedy panel show. Pakistan now heads into the final Test hoping to avoid a 3-0 series sweep amidst an internal PCB investigation into conduct and discipline.
