NEW DELHI — The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has suspended its recognition of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) with immediate effect, citing acute governance deficiencies, election delays, and administrative non-compliance.
To ensure the sport’s day-to-day operations and athlete preparations continue unimpeded, the Ministry has directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to step in and establish an ad-hoc committee in consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
Key Factors Behind the Suspension
Delayed Elections: The federation failed to conduct democratic elections within the mandated timeline, violating the National Sports Development Code.
Inadequate Explanations: The Ministry issued a formal show-cause notice regarding administrative lapses, but found the federation’s response unsatisfactory.
Selection Disputes: High-profile controversies, including star paddler Manika Batra challenging the Asian Games selection panel composition, brought intense scrutiny to procedural transparency within the executive body.
Internal Power Struggles: Frequent administrative infighting—such as the contentious suspension and subsequent court reinstatement of Secretary General Kamlesh Mehta—further eroded operational stability.

The ad-hoc mechanism constituted by the IOA will oversee domestic tournaments, international squad representations, and administrative duties until transparent, democratic elections are concluded and a compliant governance structure is restored.
