New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday kept its November judgment related to the protection and regulation of the Aravalli Hills in abeyance, signaling a temporary pause on the implementation of its earlier directions. The move came during a hearing on multiple petitions seeking clarification and modification of the verdict, which has significant environmental and developmental implications for the region.
A bench of the apex court observed that several states, including Haryana and Rajasthan, had raised concerns over the interpretation and practical impact of the November ruling. The court noted that the judgment required a more detailed examination, particularly on issues related to land use, mining restrictions, and the classification of forest land in the Aravalli range.
The November verdict had imposed strict curbs on construction and mining activities across large stretches of the Aravalli Hills, aiming to protect one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world from further ecological degradation. However, state governments and industry stakeholders argued that the ruling could adversely affect ongoing infrastructure projects and economic activity, while also creating ambiguity over land records and regulatory authority.
Taking note of these submissions, the Supreme Court decided to keep the judgment in abeyance until further orders. The bench clarified that the pause does not dilute the importance of environmental protection and that no party should take advantage of the interim relief to carry out activities that could cause irreversible damage to the Aravalli ecosystem.
The court has sought detailed responses from the concerned states and the Union government, asking them to place relevant data and legal positions on record. It also indicated that the matter would be taken up for further hearing after examining the environmental, legal, and administrative aspects involved.
Environmental activists have expressed concern over the interim relief, warning that any relaxation could lead to renewed pressure on the fragile Aravalli range. At the same time, state authorities welcomed the court’s decision, saying it would allow for a balanced approach between conservation and development.
The case remains under close watch, as the Supreme Court’s final decision is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of environmental governance and land-use regulation in the Aravalli region.
