Bangladesh Garment Industry Hit by Major Protests as Hundreds of Factories Suspend Work

Source Aljajeera

Bangladesh’s garment industry is facing major disruption as workers’ protests over low wages entered their third consecutive day on Monday, November 2. Thousands of workers have taken to the streets, demanding better pay as rising prices continue to make daily life difficult.

The protests have affected several major industrial areas, including Dhaka, Gazipur, Savar and Ashulia. Factory operations have been disrupted, while road blockades and clashes with police have added to the growing tension.

Workers Demand More Than Double Their Current Wages

The main demand of the protesting workers is an increase in the minimum monthly wage from 12,500 taka to 30,000 taka.

Workers say their current salaries are no longer enough to cover basic needs such as food, housing, transport and other household expenses. They believe a significant salary increase is necessary to manage the rising cost of living.

Thousands of workers have joined demonstrations, calling on factory owners and the government to take immediate action.

Hundreds of Factories Face Disruption

The protests have created serious problems for garment manufacturers. According to industry reports, production at around 690 factories was suspended on Monday, affecting more than 1.7 million workers.

Several factory owners temporarily stopped operations due to security concerns and fears of further violence.

The unrest has also affected road transport in industrial areas, making it difficult for workers and other commuters to travel.

Clashes With Police Increase Tension

The demonstrations have turned violent in some locations. Protesters blocked major roads and highways, while incidents of vandalism and fires were reported.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to control crowds in some areas. Security forces have also been deployed in affected industrial zones to prevent further violence.

The situation remains tense as workers continue to press for higher wages.

Government Forms Wage Board

In response to the growing protests, the Bangladesh government has formed a six-member wage board to review the salaries of garment workers.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also held an emergency meeting with senior ministers and advisers to discuss the situation and find ways to restore normal factory operations.

However, the announcement of the wage board has not yet brought an end to the demonstrations.

Export Industry Faces Growing Challenges

Bangladesh’s garment sector is one of the country’s biggest sources of income. It provides jobs to around four million people and contributes more than 80 per cent of the country’s export earnings.

The ongoing unrest has raised concerns about production delays, export orders and the confidence of international buyers.

If the protests continue, clothing shipments could face delays, creating further pressure on manufacturers.

Situation Remains Uncertain

Workers want a fair wage increase, while factory owners are worried about rising production costs and the impact on international business.

The government now faces the challenge of finding a solution that protects workers’ interests while keeping the garment industry running.

With protests continuing for a third day, the coming days will be important in deciding whether Bangladesh’s garment sector can return to normal operations.
