A harrowing, 50-hour ordeal behind enemy lines ended with an unprecedented US rescue mission inside Iranian territory, involving more than 90 elite ground troops, CIA decoys, and precision air strikes to extract a downed American officer.
The details of the classified April operation emerged after the officer, an Air Force weapons systems officer known by the call sign “Bravo,” shared the full account of his survival and extraction on CBS’s 60 Minutes.
The mission began when an F-15E Strike Eagle (call sign “Dude 44”) was struck by an Iranian shoulder-fired missile during a night strike targeting drone and missile manufacturing facilities near Isfahan. Both crew members ejected, but Bravo’s parachute failed to deploy properly. He plummeted into a rugged desert valley at high speed, suffering a fractured spine, broken arm, and shattered shoulder.
Separated by five miles from his pilot—call sign “Alpha”—Bravo dragged himself up a 7,000-foot ridgeline to evade capture, knowing Iranian search parties were closing in. According to US military officials, armed Iranian forces came within a few hundred meters of his hiding spot.
Alpha was recovered six hours post-ejection in a daytime helicopter extraction that took heavy ground fire. Bravo, however, remained missing in freezing mountain temperatures with no food and virtually no water for another full day.
The turnaround came when Bravo managed to establish encrypted contact with US commanders, confirming he was alive and moving.
To pull off the recovery, US Central Command and the CIA coordinated a multi-layered extraction plan:
The Intelligence Decoy: The CIA launched a targeted deception campaign designed to misdirect Iranian search parties, while deploying classified tracking tech to lock onto Bravo’s exact coordinates.
Airstrikes: US bombers and drones conducted surgical strikes against nearby Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) units to clear an entry corridor.
Ground Incursion: Over 90 elite operators flew deep into Iranian airspace aboard two large search-and-rescue planes, setting down on a makeshift desert airstrip—marking the first documented deployment of US ground forces inside Iran in 46 years.
From the improvised desert runway, the rescue force launched small “Little Bird” helicopters into the craggy peaks, successfully securing Bravo. His first words to the extraction team were: “Let’s go.”
The escape, however, faced one final crisis. The landing gear on both large extraction planes sank into the desert sand, immobilizing the aircraft. A clandestine Air Force unit had to be scrambled to evacuate the 90 commandos and the wounded airman.
Before departing, the US team scuttled the two trapped aircraft—each valued at roughly $100 million—along with the Little Bird helicopters, detonating the sensitive hardware to prevent advanced US avionics and weaponry from falling into Iranian hands.
Bravo crossed safely out of hostile territory at dawn on Easter Sunday, bringing an end to one of the most perilous Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) operations in modern military history.
