Breaking Ties: Exhausted Hardik Pandya Set to Part Ways with Mumbai Indians

Source The Hindu

NEW DELHI — In a stunning development that is set to reshape the landscape of the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya is reportedly on the verge of quitting the franchise.

According to top tournament sources, the 32-year-old all-rounder informed the team management of his decision midway through the recently concluded IPL 2026 season, citing acute mental stress and complete physical exhaustion.

A Fractured Return and Dressing Room Rifts

Pandya’s second stint with Mumbai Indians has been nothing short of a turbulent rollercoaster. After a highly publicised trade from Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2024 season, Pandya was handed the captaincy—a move that saw five-time champion skipper Rohit Sharma replaced. The transition triggered massive, unrelenting backlash from the MI fan base, with Pandya being subjected to heavy booing across stadiums over the last three seasons.

Sources close to the development reveal that the pressure finally took its toll. An IPL source told PTI on the condition of anonymity:

“Hardik was mentally stressed and completely exhausted. He had also sustained a back injury. In fact, once the play-off hopes were dashed, Hardik informed the decision-makers that he wouldn’t be staying back.”

The insider further added that internal friction played a significant role in his decision:

“The MI dressing room that he had left in 2021 wasn’t the same when he returned in 2024. Not every senior player was on the same page… When everyone pulls in different directions, after a point you don’t have the mental bandwidth to carry on.”

Reports also indicate that Pandya felt deeply hurt by a lack of backing from certain senior players, who reportedly did not return the same 100% commitment to his franchise leadership that they expected from him when playing for the national side.

Disastrous 2026 Campaign The Final Straw

The final nail in the coffin was MI’s dismal performance in the 2026 edition. The powerhouse franchise endured one of its worst-ever campaigns, finishing a lowly ninth on the points table with just four wins out of 14 matches.

Pandya’s personal form suffered drastically amidst the chaos. Troubled by a recurring back injury, he managed to claim only four wickets across the entire tournament and struggled to impact games with the bat. Once Mumbai’s playoff disqualification became official with several league matches still remaining, Pandya and the MI management mutually agreed that parting ways at the end of the season would be the best path forward.
