The Central Government on Monday reiterated before the Supreme Court that it remains firmly committed to its earlier assurance of not pursuing First Information Reports (FIRs) against students in connection with recent controversies. The statement came during a hearing that addressed growing apprehensions over potential legal action against students allegedly involved in protests and related activities.
Appearing before the apex court, the Centre emphasized that it has acted with restraint and sensitivity, particularly keeping in mind the academic futures and well-being of students. Government representatives clarified that no coercive steps, including the filing of FIRs, have been taken against students so far, and there is no intention to initiate such measures moving forward.
The Supreme Court, while taking note of the Centre’s submission, sought further clarity on the steps taken by authorities at the state level. The bench underscored the importance of ensuring that students are not subjected to unnecessary legal harassment, especially in situations involving peaceful expression of dissent.
