Kolkata: Fresh political controversy has emerged for Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) issued a summons to him in connection with an alleged forged signature case.
According to officials, the CID is investigating allegations related to the use of a forged signature on certain documents. As part of the ongoing probe, Banerjee has been asked to appear before investigators and provide his statement regarding the matter.
The development has sparked a political storm in West Bengal, with opposition parties accusing the ruling TMC of failing to maintain transparency. TMC leaders, however, have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and claimed that central and state agencies are being used to target opposition leaders.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the CID is examining documentary evidence and statements from individuals linked to the case. Officials have not disclosed further details, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing inquiry.
Abhishek Banerjee, who serves as the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and is considered one of the party’s most influential leaders, has not yet issued a detailed public response to the summons.
The case is expected to attract significant political attention in the coming days as investigators continue their probe and opposition parties seek to capitalize on the controversy ahead of future electoral battles.
