COLUMBUS, Ohio — In a resounding victory for the “America First” movement, biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy dominated the Ohio Republican gubernatorial primary on Tuesday. Ramaswamy secured more than 82% of the vote, effectively clearing the field and solidifying his position as the standard-bearer for the GOP in the Buckeye State.
The victory marks a successful pivot for the 40-year-old billionaire, who briefly served as co-lead of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration earlier this year before resigning to focus on the governor’s mansion.
A Decisive Mandate
Ramaswamy’s primary campaign was defined by massive fundraising leads and a high-profile endorsement from President Donald Trump, who reiterated his “complete and total” backing of the candidate on election night.
Standing before a jubilant crowd in Columbus, Ramaswamy declared the primary results a sign of a unified party ready for a “consequential” battle in November.
“This is more than just a win; it’s a mandate to dismantle the bureaucracy in Columbus just as we’ve started to do in D.C.,” Ramaswamy told supporters. “The contrast in this election has never been sharper.”
His main challenger, political newcomer and automotive designer Casey Putsch, trailed far behind with roughly 18%. Putsch’s campaign, which often relied on controversial rhetoric regarding Ramaswamy’s heritage and faith, failed to gain traction against the well-funded and organized Ramaswamy machine.
The General Election Matchup
Ramaswamy now advances to a high-stakes general election against Democrat Dr. Amy Acton, the state’s former health director. Acton, who ran unopposed in her primary, rose to national prominence for her role in Ohio’s COVID-19 response.
The upcoming race is expected to be a referendum on two vastly different visions for Ohio:
Ramaswamy’s Platform: Focusing on massive property tax rollbacks, the elimination of state income tax, and a radical overhaul of the state’s public university system.
Acton’s Platform: Centering on “bread-and-butter” economic issues, including child tax credits, Medicaid expansion, and reducing prescription drug costs.
National Implications
While Ohio has leaned reliably Republican in recent cycles—with a Democrat not holding the governorship in two decades—non-partisan analysts suggest the race could be competitive. The Cook Political Report recently shifted the contest from “Likely Republican” to “Leans Republican,” citing Acton’s personal popularity and voter concerns over the cost of living.
If successful in November, Ramaswamy would become the third Indian-American governor in U.S. history, following in the footsteps of Republicans Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley.
