VIENNA — For years, the term “audiophile soundbar” has been treated by audio purists as an absolute oxymoron. Traditional soundbars rely on dozens of tiny drivers and digital wizardry to bounce artificial surround sound off your walls—a parlor trick that usually falls flat when subjected to critical music listening.
However, Danish audio upstart Canvas HiFi is directly challenging that narrative. At the High End Vienna 2026 trade show, the company unveiled its groundbreaking Canvas L, boldly marketing it as the “world’s first audiophile soundbar.” After an exclusive first listen, industry experts are coming away stunned, admitting that this heavy-duty system might actually back up its massive claims.
Retuning the Soundbar Blueprint
Instead of stuffing the enclosure with miniature speakers to mimic a Dolby Atmos setup, Canvas HiFi took a radically different approach: they built a high-end, traditional three-way stereo loudspeaker system and cleverly disguised it as a sleek, TV-mounted bar.
Tuned by acclaimed speaker designer Benno Baun Meldgaard, the internal hardware reads like a hi-fi enthusiast’s wish list rather than a standard piece of home theater gear:
The Drivers: Two linear-phase tweeter/midrange modules featuring 29mm SB Acoustics ring radiator tweeters and custom 4-inch Scan-Speak midrange drivers.
The Bass: Four massive 8-inch Scan-Speak mid/bass woofers paired with matching passive radiators—an unprecedented size for an under-TV enclosure.
The Power: A staggering 1500W of Class D amplification guided by an AD Quad-Core DSP system and a premium Burr-Brown DAC.
To house this intense hardware without the chassis rattling themselves to pieces, the Canvas L ditches cheap plastics for a highly rigid, proprietary Compact Density Fibreboard enclosure utilizing an upgraded “BridgeBrace+” resonance-reducing architecture.
Ditching Atmos for Better Acoustic Science
Crucially, the Canvas L ignores native Dolby Atmos or DTS:X decoding. Instead, it utilizes BACCH 3D Spatial Audio algorithms licensed from Princeton University. The processing relies on advanced crosstalk cancellation to eliminate the acoustic interference that happens when your left and right ears hear both speakers simultaneously.
The result is a remarkably wide, organic soundstage that mimics the depth and physical scale of massive, standalone stereo towers.
Form Factor and Availability
Designed to blend seamlessly into modern living spaces, the Canvas L attaches directly to the back of a television via standard VESA mounts (supporting displays ranging from 65 to 115 inches) rather than sitting flat on a media console. The front panel can be customized with high-end wood grilles or sleek textiles to blend into premium decor.
While official pricing for the new flagship has not yet been detailed, it is expected to sit comfortably above the current model’s $4,999 (£3,299) price tag when it officially rolls out to consumer markets toward the end of 2026. Audiophiles who previously scoffed at the idea of a television soundbar may finally have to eat their words.
