The Delhi High Court has sharply criticized the Wrestling Federation for its decision to declare Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat ineligible, raising concerns over transparency and fairness in the selection process.
During the hearing, the court questioned the basis on which the federation arrived at its decision, emphasizing the need for clear rules and consistent application of eligibility criteria. The bench noted that actions affecting an athlete’s career must be supported by well-documented reasoning and cannot appear arbitrary.
Vinesh Phogat, one of India’s most prominent wrestlers, had challenged the federation’s decision, arguing that the move was unjust and lacked proper explanation. Her plea highlighted alleged procedural lapses and sought judicial intervention to ensure a fair review.
The court observed that sports bodies hold significant responsibility in safeguarding athletes’ rights and careers. It stressed that any decision impacting participation at national or international levels must follow due process and uphold principles of natural justice.
In response, the Wrestling Federation defended its stance, stating that the decision was taken in accordance with existing regulations. However, the court remained unconvinced and directed the body to provide detailed records and justification for its action.
The matter has now been scheduled for further hearing, with the court indicating that it will closely examine whether the federation adhered to its own rules and whether the decision against Phogat was legally sustainable.
The case has sparked wider debate within the sporting community about governance, accountability, and the treatment of athletes by administrative bodies.
