DRDO’s 21-Km Airship Test Gives India a New ‘Eye in the Sky’

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully tested an indigenously developed High-Altitude Platform (HAPS), marking an important step in India’s efforts to build long-endurance systems for surveillance and other high-altitude missions.

During the test on October 6, the platform reached 21 kilometres above mean sea level and then stayed at around 20 kilometres for more than 30 minutes. It was later brought back to the ground and recovered safely.

What is India’s HAPS?

HAPS is a lighter-than-air platform designed to operate in the stratosphere, far above the normal flying range of commercial aircraft. In simple terms, it can be seen as a high-altitude airship that can stay above a particular area and monitor it for long periods.

Unlike a satellite, HAPS does not orbit the Earth. It remains within the atmosphere and can potentially be brought back to the ground for maintenance or upgrades. This gives it a useful middle ground between satellites and conventional aircraft.

The system is being designed and developed by DRDO’s Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) in Agra.

What happened during the test?

The experimental platform first climbed to 21 km before maintaining an altitude of 20 km for over 30 minutes.

During the flight, it sent real-time video and other flight information to a Ground Control Station. The platform carried systems including a GPS receiver, onboard cameras, an inertial measurement unit and an altitude-control system.

The data received on the ground showed that the platform performed as expected during the trial.

Why does HAPS matter for India?

The biggest advantage of such a platform is its potential to provide long-duration aerial surveillance.

A HAPS operating high above the ground could help monitor large areas for extended periods. It could be useful for border surveillance, intelligence gathering and Earth observation, depending on the sensors and equipment carried by the platform.

Because it operates much closer to Earth than a satellite, it can also offer greater flexibility for missions that require continuous observation of a particular region.

More than just a defence project

HAPS technology could have uses beyond military surveillance. Similar high-altitude platforms can potentially support communications, disaster response and Earth observation.

The latest test also involved coordination with the Indian Air Force, CEMILAC, DGCA, Airports Authority of India and other civil authorities, showing the scale of planning needed for such a high-altitude flight.

A step towards self-reliance

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the armed forces, public-sector units and industry partners involved in the trial. He described the achievement as an important milestone in India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat effort to develop a long-endurance stratospheric airship.

The 21-km test is therefore more than a single successful flight. It gives India valuable experience in operating high-altitude platforms and moves the country closer to developing an indigenous long-lasting “eye in the sky” for future surveillance and other missions.
