Drone Strikes Escalate Tensions: Houthis Claim Attacks on Saudi Airport and Aramco Facilities

Riyadh/ Sanaa, August 20, 2026 — Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a fresh round of drone attacks targeting key infrastructure in southern Saudi Arabia, including Najran airport and facilities owned by state oil giant Aramco, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.

According to statements released by the group’s military spokesperson Yahya Saree, the Houthis carried out two coordinated drone operations. The first reportedly targeted what was described as a “sensitive” site at Najran airport, while the second struck an Aramco oil facility in the same region.

The Najran region, located near the Saudi-Yemen border, has frequently been a flashpoint in the ongoing conflict between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The latest strikes highlight the continued vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the area and the persistent threat posed by drone warfare.

Despite the claims made by the Houthis, there was no immediate confirmation or official response from Saudi authorities regarding the attacks or any potential damage or casualties.

The rebel group indicated that the strikes were carried out in retaliation for what they described as violations of Yemeni airspace by Saudi forces, particularly in the Saada province, a Houthi stronghold.

This incident comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions across the Middle East, with increasing hostilities linked to the broader Iran-Saudi rivalry. Analysts note that such attacks not only deepen the Yemen conflict but also pose risks to global energy markets, given Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role as one of the world’s leading oil producers.

In recent months, the Houthis have intensified their use of drones and missiles to target airports, oil facilities, and other strategic assets within Saudi territory. Previous attacks have occasionally disrupted operations and raised concerns over regional stability and energy security.

As the situation unfolds, international observers are closely monitoring developments, particularly any response from Saudi Arabia or its allies, which could further escalate the already fragile security environment in the region.

The latest strikes underscore the ongoing volatility in the Middle East and the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and bring a lasting resolution to the Yemen conflict.
