Echoes of 2020: Why Apple’s Foldable Campaign Looks Uncannily Like the Surface Duo

Source windows latest

CUPERTINO — When Apple revealed its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, tech enthusiasts experienced an immediate wave of déjà vu. Beyond borrowing Microsoft’s chosen nomenclature, the promotional imagery and marketing framing for the iPhone Duo bear a striking resemblance to the campaign Microsoft ran for the original Surface Duo in September 2020.

Apple’s promotional slate presents the new device in a series of familiar postures: propped open like a miniature notebook, angled in a hands-free “tent” orientation on a desk, paired with an Apple Pencil for jotting notes, and running side-by-side workflows. For anyone following foldable technology over the past decade, these compositions look nearly identical to Panos Panay’s original pitches for the Surface Duo six years ago.

A Shared Productivity Vision

The parallels extend beyond product photography into core design philosophy:

Passport Proportions: Apple specifically highlights the iPhone Duo’s passport-like form factor when closed, mirroring the exact pocket-notebook silhouette Microsoft championed to differentiate itself from tall, narrow foldables.

Dual-Pane Logic: Rather than treating the 7.6-inch interior panel simply as an oversized tablet canvas, Apple’s software focuses heavily on treating the folding screen as two distinct working halves—allowing drag-and-drop multitasking and paired app launches reminiscent of Microsoft’s App Groups.

Stylus Integration: Microsoft pitched the Surface Duo as a digital Moleskine notebook powered by the Surface Slim Pen. Apple has followed suit, bringing Apple Pencil support to the inner canvas to anchor its productivity appeal.

Two Different Paths Under the Hood

While Microsoft struggled with software bugs, a fragile plastic chassis, and the limitations of an awkward 360-degree hinge without an external display, Apple has applied modern manufacturing maturity to the concept. With grade-5 titanium edges, an uninterrupted folding OLED display, and top-tier silicon, Apple is executing the dual-screen productivity vision that Microsoft pioneered but ultimately abandoned.
